emerging church weekend feb 20-22

Readingflier
this year the course resource has opened up the weekends so that anyone can buy into an individual weekend. the next one is in reading from 20-22 february on emerging church. you may remember we have been there before and i have posted photos of the amazing space at st laurence's who host us. the weekend consists of some teaching, storytelling (hearing from st laurence's in particular) and group discussions plus plenty of chance to meet and talk with other peple on the course - often one of the most valuable parts of any conference like this in my experience.

people who will be teaching include me, beth keith, bob and mary hopkins, roger ellis and chris russell.

so how about coming? i get so many groups of visitors who i meet for coffee in london or who show up at grace wanting to know about alt worship, emerging church and all that - from europe, us, aus etc. if you are thinking about such a pilgrimage or live with those questions then this weekend is a great opportunity. you can grab this jpeg image or download a pdf from here. maybe see some of you there?

twitter tips

twitteryou may have noticed i have started using twitter - yes i know first facebook and now twitter... anyway if so the irrepressible darren rowse has started twitip - a blog with tips for twitter which may be of interest if you tweet.

the only twitter tip i have is that if you want you blog post to automatically appear in a tweet i do that with twitterfeed though there are probably a ton of ways to do it.

read the bible in a year

have you ever read the whole bible? i used to do it every year though haven't for some years now. but i recommend it - it's a few chapters each day. if that is of interest youversion is an online plan that's worth a look...

jpg magazine

JPG magazine announced they are closing due to financial challenges, although there does now seem to be a glimmer of hope. you can download back issues of the magazine from the site while it still exists. i bought an issue a few years back when it was self published on lulu from a group on flickr! (ht richard)

seems like i am not alone

seems like i am not alone in rebuilding or rethinking my blog. if you are too, problogger's 31 days to building a better blog series has some really good stuff in it. sadly i only read this after redoing mine.

and on the notion of presences bob pointed me to this piece on aligning your lifestreams...

today i am off to the iasym conference where it will be good to catch up with a few people - i'm just calling in for one day.

journeying - grace new year labyrinth

join us at grace next saturday for a labyrinth, a great way to walk prayerfully into the new year

grace new year labyrinth

a new blog and a new digital self for a new year...

happy new year! i can't believe it's 2009 - it seems only a few moments ago that we entered a new millenium.

so i have redesigned the blog and here's a few headlines about the new approach

1. presences
i realise we all have different digital habits to manage the flow of information and friendships and hang out in different spaces and places - facebook, twitter, flickr, or whatever. it's partly taste and partly what we have time for and partly where our networks of friends hang out. so i have created a set of presences ( a term i stole from jenny brown who is personally responsible for catalysing these changes by suggesting my blog or blogs in general were a bit 2004!). this is simply a set of icons in the middle column. so if you are in any of those worlds you know how to find me there. and yes i know - first facebook, and now twitter!

2. incarnation and the digital self
ok i admit utterly pretentious title! but here's what i mean. most people do not want to visit my blog even though i have just spent a few days making it look wonderful (please come once and let me know what you think!). why should you come to my world? life's too short. but it should hopefully be easy enough if you want to follow my stream of consciousness for me to flow in your world/sphere/network/set of presences. so click the feed or add me in twitter or facebook or myspace or bloglines or your newsreader and the latest blog posts or titles will appear automatically.

3. categories
typepad which i use to blog and am still a big fan of has categories - i have singled out 5 main areas that i blog under that are the buttons in the navigation section on the right hand side, but all the other categories still exist so if you are interested in a particular category then just click on it and scroll through the posts.

4. recycling
i started blogging in 2002 which is a scary thought in itself. but it means that there is a ton of stuff buried in the archives. now a lot of it was in the moment and is best left buried but actually there is also a ton of stuff that is worth recycling. so there is a section on the home page with 10 recycled items and on the (new) faith, photo, and create (yet to be done) pages is a ton of recycled links . this may be of interest - it's actually pretty useful for me so it's as much for my benefit as yours.

5. upcoming
one of the cool and weird things about writing a blog is that it has definitely connected me with you - readers all round the world which i have loved. and i have been invited by people who have never met me to speak in various places round the world. this has amazed me and i have loved it! i have signed up with upcoming.org (haven't added much to it yet) to post places i am speaking/leading/hanging out and there is an automatic feed of those on the front page right hand column so you can see where i will be.

6. simplified
the front page has less stuff - or at least it's better ordered. if you really liked something that has gone or wonder where it is now let me know... the blog is as ever a work in progress. but two big things were a huge list of blogs and a list of other things. they can be found by clicking on the two icons in the middle column under the title linkage. the other links are now simply going to be my favourites in delicious. i haven't been that up to date with it but intend to improve my habit there.

7. new look
the black look was fun for a year but i have changed to white as a background as in the end it's easier to read and looks cleaner. i have also gone for something colourful as a header and buttons - not sure why - was in a bright mood! if you are a typepad user and wondering about the technical side of it, then i have simply use a 3 column right template but had to add some extra css code to get the central column the size i wanted so i haven't had to go to the advanced template and can work within typepad's design system. happy to share that if anyone is interested - i am really pleased with it anyway.

8. it's all about you
it amazes me still that people read my blog - i should be used to it by now. i am busy so blogging is a habit that i manage to keep going but sometimes don't give enough time to you the readers though i do try and respond to comments. but hey thanks for your interest/friendship/tolerance/fellow travelling/reading/comments. i haven't finshed everything off but that's detail now... hope you enjoy the new approach and see you in some digital presence or other. and thanks jenny brown and bob carlton for kicking my digital backside in 2008 into another gear for 2009!

best love one and all xxx

christmas ambient tunes - worship trick 53

i was looking on jon hopkins web site (perhaps my favourite artist of the moment) and followed a link to sound asleep records who look like a label worth keeping an eye on if you like your music ambient or electronic - i guess a little in the vein of kranky records for those of you who have discovered the delight of the incredible dead texan album.

anyway it turns out they have a free 8 tracks of their artists doing christmas songs. i am not sure how long this offer is up now christmas is over. you can link to it from their front page or this is currently the direct link. there are a couple of tunes here that are gems including an amazing 11 minute ambient silent night and they will no doubt be providing a soundscape to some alt worship in ealing next advent...

this is worship trick 53, series 3

sponge bob is trapped

sponge bob is trapped, originally uploaded by jonnybaker.

in the cabot circus shopping centre in bristol sponge bob was trying to escape but ended up trapped inside the consumer bubble!

it's that time of year...

i always find that a few lazy days over christmas and new year gives me time to do a few things i don't normally get time for and one of those is rethinking and redesigning the blog. so i'll be making some changes over the next day or so. so if it looks weird at any point that's why. will blog more about the changes after it's all done...

banksy

we spent a few days over christmas with my brother dave, lou and sam in bristol being wined and dined which was wonderful. it was nice to neglect the digital life for a few days too.

i know i am a little late in the day for this but we walked down frogmore street so i managed to get a photo of the banksy window to add to my collection of banksy pics

we called in today to see the touring version of the wildlife photographer of the year exhibition which was wonder-full as ever. the touring version is free in bristol which was a pleasant surprise, (though not so well presented as the natural history museum)

happy christmas!

Christmascard08

i am signing off the blog until after christmas...

happy christmas one and all!

advent revisited

a couple of advent links for you...

the hubble space telescope advent calendar for a dose of wonder (thanks boytons)

sanktuary

sanktuary logomark berry and the telford community safespace kick off a new venture sanktuary tonight. it's a chill out safe space for clubbers that runs from 11:30pm to 3am. they have been working really hard over the last few weeks to get it all together and ian, a new member of the community, has put his sign making skills to good use - love the signs and furnishings. mark's a bit nervous as their first night is known as fighting friday in telford - the last friday before christmas. the idea of the space is that it's a good safe space in which to unwind, be safe off the streets while you can caht and order a taxi. the council are so pleased it's happening they have given money towards it and the police are fully supportive...

o little town of bethlehem - the gospel under occupation

i have visited bethlehem once in 19998. the trip i went on was amazing - hard but really good. i went with the amos trust, a small charity who punch beyond their weight standing in solidarity with the oppressed and campaigning for justice. because they are small they invest time in particular areas and relationships. palestine and israel has been one of those areas. anyway all this by way of saying amos trust are organising a trip the gospel under occupation in may next year. kester brewin and chris rose will lead the trip. and here's some info

The trip is from 22nd to 30th May.

It's just over £1000 all in from the UK, or £500 from the US/elsewhere if you book your own way to Tel Aviv.

As you know, it's an amazing opportunity for anyone of faith to 'walk where Jesus walked', as well as see some great Banksy's ;-)

Plus, on this trip in particular, we are wanting to focus on the leadership needs in the area. That could be theological leadership - getting some new thinking on the situation - or social/entrepreneurial leadership to help build capacity in the Palestinian economy.

It will be very exciting / eye opening... great opportunities to meet the 'living stones', and peace-makers from all sides right at the heart of so many world events.

grace 'christmas in bethlehem'i realise i never said anything about the last grace which focused on bethlehem. it included a 26 foot screen to show the actual height of the now walled city of bethlehem. and there were various segments of an amos trust video that were shown and a set of stations for prayer. one included standing in solidarity offering messages of hope to residents of the hamlets of humsa and hadidya, in the occupied palestinian territories. more details are on the Amnesty website. and dean has added a set of photos here...

100 web sites

today's guardian has 100 top web sites of the year. two i am going to check out immediately are 280slides and twitterfeed . i'll report back at some point!

typepad gets a new platform

well i don't know what it means yet but when i log in to typepad (the blog provider i use), there is an announcement saying it has shifted to a new platform. let's hope it's good...

i have now looked a bit further and it says flock is not a supported browser yet! but i can see the new interface fine so maybeall will be well?...
