Every good and perfect gift

There is a question sitting quietly underneath much of our praying, our planning, and even our worship. It rarely announces itself, yet it shapes everything: Is God actually generous? Not in theory, generous towards you, in this season, in this home, in this ordinary week. James answers with prophetic clarity: "Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows" (James 1:17).
Notice the direction of travel. Gifts come down. We do not climb to earn them; heaven descends to deliver them. And notice the scope: every good gift. The sunrise over the meadows. The friend whose kindness caught you off guard. The provision that arrived just in time. The breath in your lungs as you read this. None of it is an accident. All of it is Father.

We are living through days of extraordinary shifting. Life is changing pace, circumstances rearrange themselves without warning, and many feel the ground moving beneath them. In times like these, we instinctively reach for something fixed, and James points us straight to it. The Father of lights does not change like shifting shadows. Seasons turn, plans alter, shadows lengthen across Runnymede by evening. The Giver never flickers. And if the source is unchanging, our security is not in the gift but in the Giver. That releases us to stop lingering in the now and press into the days ahead, to touch tomorrow today, because the One who holds tomorrow is already there.

Jesus put it this way: "If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!" (Matthew 7:11). How much more. Let those three words do their work in you. Many of us carry a picture of a reluctant God who must be persuaded into blessing. Jesus dismantles it. The Kingdom does not trickle from a stingy heaven; it flows from a Father whose delight is to give.
Here is the heartbeat of it all: the Kingdom operates by exchange. We bring what we have; He gives what He has. A boy offers loaves and fish; heaven returns a feast. We bring our anxiety; He exchanges it for peace. We bring our ordinary lives, our time, our talents, our Monday mornings and school runs, surrendered in faith, and His power multiplies what is offered for His glory.

And this exchange is not confined to Sunday. Wherever this week takes you, a kitchen table, a classroom, a hospital ward, a neighbour's doorstep, you carry the generosity of heaven with you. Every conversation is a chance for someone to encounter the goodness of God. And everyone gets to play; the gifts of the Spirit were never reserved for the platform. Ask boldly for healing, wisdom and provision; you are not twisting God's arm, simply positioning yourself under the waterfall. Gratitude, meanwhile, trains the eye. Try it this week: each evening, name three gifts from the day, the kind word, the shared meal, the moment of peace. The more you thank Him, the more you will see Him.

Every good gift is, in the end, a signpost to the greatest exchange of all. "Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!" writes Paul (2 Corinthians 9:15). At the cross, He took our sin and gave us His righteousness; our poverty, and gave us His riches. The Father gave what was most precious to Him for us, and He has not changed one bit since.

So let me leave you with three questions to carry into the week. What good gift have you received lately that you have not yet traced back to the Father? What ordinary thing is He asking you to place in His hands for multiplication? And who around you needs to taste the generosity of heaven through you this week?
Every good and perfect gift comes down from Him. Including you. Including this fellowship. Including today.

 Prophetic word for students -

Our Sunday service starts at 11.00 and typically lasts about 90 minutes.

We begin each service with lively worship, featuring songs from around the world, followed by inspiring, Bible-based teaching. All our sermons are recorded and are available as a podcast after the service.

We have a monthly cycle of Sunday services, with our Communion Service on the first Sunday of each month and an All-Age All-Nation Service on the second. Our other Sunday services include Spirit-focused and teaching services.

We have consciously adopted being a blended church, that is, both online and face-to-face. You are welcome to join us on Livestream or via Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, or X, or catch up with the recordings later.

Visiting with children?

Everyone is welcome at RCF. We encourage everyone, regardless of age, to join the service. We offer Sunday School, which begins after worship and runs concurrently with the sermon for 30 to 40 minutes, serving children aged 4 to 12. On the second Sunday of each month, we have a shorter All-Aged All Nations Service, where the children stay for the worship and the sermon.

We chat over coffee and biscuits after church on the first, third, fourth and fifth Sundays. If you want to get to know us better, why not join us for Sunday lunch with some of our members?
