Holiness makes a difference in our world through God's People

Holiness can sound like something fragile, best placed on a high shelf where it won't get broken. Yet when I open my Bible, I find something very different. I find a holiness that rolls up its sleeves, walks out into the street and changes things.

God says to His people, "Be holy, because I am holy" (1 Peter 1:16, echoing Leviticus 11:44). That isn't an invitation to hide away from the world. It's a call to reflect the character of God in the very places where we live, work and play. Holiness isn't about being separate from people. It's about being set apart for God so that we can be given away for others. Even in the Old Testament, God's holy people were called to care for the foreigner, the widow and the orphan (Deuteronomy 10:18-19). Holiness and compassion have always belonged together.

Think about Jesus. He was the holiest person who ever walked this earth, and yet the religious leaders of His day were scandalised by the company He kept. He touched a man with leprosy (Mark 1:40-42), ate with tax collectors (Luke 5:29-32) and allowed a woman with a questionable reputation to anoint His feet (Luke 7:36-50). Under the old understanding, touching something unclean made you unclean. With Jesus, the opposite happened. His holiness was contagious. The leper was made clean. Zacchaeus was made generous (Luke 19:8). The broken woman was sent away in peace. That's the kind of holiness God wants to pour through us. Not a holiness that keeps its distance, but one that carries the life of heaven into the broken places of earth.

Jesus told His disciples, "You are the salt of the earth... You are the light of the world" (Matthew 5:13-14). Notice He didn't say "try to be" or "one day you might become". He said you are. Salt only does its work when it leaves the cupboard and gets into the food. Light is only useful when it shines into darkness. A holy life isn't measured by how far it stays from the world, but by how much flavour and brightness it brings to it. Here in Egham, that might look like a kind word to a stressed colleague on the morning commute, choosing honesty when cutting corners would be easier, taking a meal round to a neighbour who's struggling, or making time for a lonely student far from home. These aren't small things. In God's hands they become seeds of the Kingdom, just like the mustard seed that grows into a tree where the birds find shelter (Matthew 13:31-32).

Sometimes we think of holiness mainly in terms of what we avoid. There's certainly a place for that, because sin damages us and those around us. But holiness is far more than a list of don'ts. Paul writes, "clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience" (Colossians 3:12). Holiness is something we put on. It's worn in the supermarket queue, in the office, at the school gate and around the kitchen table. The prophet Micah put it beautifully when he said that the Lord requires us to act justly, to love mercy and to walk humbly with our God (Micah 6:8).

Let me be honest. None of us can manufacture this on our own. If holiness depended on willpower, most of us would have given up by Tuesday! The good news is that holiness is the fruit of the Holy Spirit at work within us (Galatians 5:22-23). Fruit doesn't grow by straining; it grows by staying connected. Jesus said, "Remain in me, as I also remain in you" (John 15:4). As we spend time with Him in prayer, worship and His Word, we are being transformed into His image with ever increasing glory (2 Corinthians 3:18).

Holiness is also something we live out together. Peter describes the church as "a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation" (1 Peter 2:9). A nation, not a collection of isolated individuals. When God's people love one another, forgive one another and serve their community side by side, the world takes notice. Jesus said that everyone would know we are His disciples by our love for one another (John 13:35). In Acts 2 the early believers shared what they had, cared for those in need and enjoyed the favour of all the people, and day by day the Lord added to their number (Acts 2:44-47).

So as you go into this week, ask the Lord where He has placed you to be salt and light, and who around you needs to experience the kindness of Jesus. Holiness isn't a museum piece. It's God's beautiful, life giving character flowing through ordinary people like you and me, bringing hope, healing and change wherever we go. Our world doesn't need a church that hides away. It needs a church that shines, so that others may see our good deeds and glorify our Father in heaven (Matthew 5:16).

We have a monthly cycle of Sunday services, with our Communion Service on the first Sunday of each month and an All-Age All-Nation Service on the second. Our other Sunday services include a Lingering (spirit-filled) and Teaching service.

We have consciously adopted being a blended church, that is, both online and face-to-face. You are welcome to join us on Livestream or via Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, or X, or catch up with the recordings later.
